Training and Acceptable Documentation:
Training must be prevention-specific, related to the 6 performance domains and/or 4 Core Prevention Functions, and approved by the TCB. Applicants should contact the TCB if they are unsure about the approval of a training course. While online courses can be accepted, there is value in face-to-face training for prevention specialists, which the TCB strongly encourages whenever possible.
Applicants are responsible for submitting timely and appropriate documentation of training and other required information for verification and approval. For training, proof of attendance is required (e.g. certificate of completion or letter from the training entity). Documentation should include the applicant’s name, training source, contact hours completed, subject matter and date(s) of attendance. Applicants should allow sufficient time for their application submission documents to be reviewed and processed. Note: meeting agendas, programs, and Power Point slides will not be considered verifiable proof of attendance without a candidate’s documentation of attendance.
As part of the application process for the Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) credential, all applicants are required to submit to be fingerprinted, as part of a background check. Your fingerprints will be used to check the criminal history records of the FBI.
All applicants must submit to a background check at their expense and fees will be paid directly to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). Information on obtaining a background check will be provided to applicants during the registration process. The results of the background check will be sent directly to the TCB.

Upgrade of Certification Level:
Prevention specialists holding CPS I certification, issued by TCB, who desire to increase their level of certification to CPS II, can apply for a level increase at any time. A level increase application will be sent to the applicant at their request. There is no need to retake the IC&RC exam. There is an $85 non-refundable processing fee.
